How You Can Help Our Newest Neighbors!

October 16, 2019

Dearest Claremont Canopy Supporters,

The news from the Trump administration, that they plan to further downsize the US Federal refugee program, is disheartening. In 2020 the program will allow only 18,000 refugees to be awarded resettlement in America. This not only effects the number of families allowed to resettle, but it has catastrophic consequences for the licensed government refugee agencies that help those that are allowed to come. When you cut the number of refugees allowed into our country, this also cuts the funding provided to our government agencies. In California, we have seen 11 of the 28 agencies close due to decreased federal funding. It makes organizations like Claremont Canopy more crucial than ever, we are stepping in to welcome our new neighbors as the government agencies are closing.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We have created an Amazon wishlist for the items that are not covered by the CalFresh "food stamp" program. Did you know that this program does not cover non-food items like toothpaste, deodorant, etc? The costs for these life necessities can add up quickly for our families. Check out the list with the link below, you can purchase items, leave a note for our new arrival families and it will be directly delivered to Canopy where we can distribute these supplies as needed!

The Claremont Canopy family has grown!

We would like to introduce you to our newest neighbor, Samer Alramadan. He arrived to the Claremont area just a few weeks ago. In 2014, while he was completing his senior year of college where he was studying Economics, he and his family (Mom, Dad, 6 brothers and 4 sisters) fled Syria and moved to Lebanon. In Lebanon they all applied with UNCHR as refugees and Samer worked construction there as they anxiously awaited placement. Unfortunately only Samer's resettlement in the US was awarded and the rest of his family's case is still pending. Samer dreams of the day he can be reunited with his family here in the United States and he hopes to complete his college degree that he started in Syria! Welcome Samer! We are so happy you are here!

We are so grateful for your support, without YOU we could not do what we do!

Wishing you a wonderful week!
